DRAGON AND DAISY – Street Performance (SLOVENIA)
Premiere: 07.06.2008, Pungert at 11.00
The Artizani Artistic Puppet Company works under the wing of the Children's
Cultural Centre "The House of Children and Art". Its members believe that an
active involvement in arts shows us the way to ourselves and to others. Through art,
children acquire social skills; they learn how to overcome difficulties without the help of others,
they personally grow, develop different skills and discover their talents.
"The House of Children and Art" is open to all who believe that creative power is
a sine-qua-non condition for a good quality of life, that creative games allow children
to acquire important experiences, to get to know different emotional reactions, to
explore human relations…
The performance "Dragon and Daisy" was created on the basis of a late medieval
bestseller from the thirteenth century, written by Jacobus de Voragin and known
by the title “Golden Legend”. The main protagonist is Saint George, a knight who
lived at the end of the third and at the beginning of the fourth century. The story
is about a dragon that made his nest above the only water source, located above the
town of Liddy. In exchange for water the citizens each day sacrificed a man chosen by chance.
One day the lot fell upon a beautiful princess. Saint George, a young knight on a white horse,
killed the dragon and saved her life. In grateful thanks for his bravery the citizens of this
oriental town accepted Christianity. The young members of The Artizani Artistic Puppet
Company turned the legend into a street performance with live music, three-headed
dragon and a knight on stilts. Designed as a promenade, the interactive performance
allows the spectators and passer-bys to interfere. In an impro theatre style content
of the story adjusts to the environment in which the performance takes place.

is studying at the Salzburg Experimental Academy of Dance (SEAD) in Austria.
SEAD is a private dance school, which gives its students the opportunity to
choreograph and present their work, to teach in adult’s and children’s education
programme and to participate in exchange programmes abroad. Its motto is
"open-mindness and constant inspiration". Sapucai is the name of the main street
where the competition for the best fantasy, best performance, best dance, best music,
etc, at the Carnival of Rio de Janeiro has taken place. Renan Martins de Oliveira borrowed
this idea and created a solo performance based on his own best conception, best dance,
best music and best performance. New environment confronted him with the idea of what
dance represents in the city and how it functions as a cultural and social event.
Renan stared to dance in Brazil, where dance is a part of the culture and he is now
studying contemporary dance in a city where a strong classical tradition meets European
contemporary dance. He created a solo based on his own experience of being exposed to a
new environment and looking at the situation from a position of foreigner who found himself
in a completely new situation, with new tradition and new rules. The performance is
supported by video material from TV show "So you think you can dance!"
LINKAGE - Street performance (Vita Osojnik)
Premiere: 05.06.2008, France Prešeren Street - Kranj at 18.00
The performance focuses on the exploration of different possible usages of
s ace and environment, which are not directly designed for dance movements,
but everyday life. Such space demands from the performer to discover anew
his own body, as some movements change completely due to the adaptation to a
new environment; open space with numerous elements of chaos and noise swallows
up the individual and turns him into a passer-by. . . Travelling, borders, quests,
displacements, distinctions and similarities. . . We are about to discover anew
something we already know – our city, the city whose structure is so familiar,
whose buildings we could draw by heart without looking at them, whose faces, streets,
shops and statues are easily recognizable, whose churches, theatres and various taverns
had been our sanctuaries on many occasions. . . Numerous performers throughout the city
suddenly start to implement different forms of movements, which consist of choreographic
as well as common, everyday movements. . . They occasionally connect the spectators with
the performers, who then repeatedly lose themselves in the hustle and bustle of Prešernova ulica.

SAMMANAKHA THE WAR CARRIER – Theatre Performance (THAILAND)

The Moradokmai Theatre Company comes from Patumtani Province,
40 km away from central Bangkok, Thailand. They exist since 1995.
A group of authors live together in a community in order to contribute to
a more ecological world through drama. One of their leading philosophies is:
"You are what you eat, what you read, and what you teach."
Samanakha was a giant and a beloved sister of Tosakan, an antagonist
character in Ramakien, the greatest epic in Thai literature. She fell madly
in love with Bhra Rama at first sight, while he was washing himself in a river in
a deep forest. She followed him to his shelter and realized that Bhra Rama was already
married to a very beautiful woman, called Sida. Samanakha was hurt, but couldn't stop
loving him. Therefore, she enviously harassed Sida. Bhra Rama tried to stop her,
but did not succeed. Finally, he cut off her ears, nose, arms and legs. With the
help of some supernatural powers, Samanakha managed to escape and took refuge at
her brothers's, Tosakan. In order to take revenge on Bhra Rama, she introduced Tosakan
to the beautiful Sida, whom he immediately fell in love with. Tosakan kidnapped Sida,
which led to a 7 years long war between giants and men.
TO HEAR YOU BETTER – IS THIS ENOUGH FOR LITTLE RED RIDDING HOOD – Dance Performance (SLOVENIA)
Premiere: 06.05.2008, France Prešeren Teather at 20.00
In his development as an artist, Matej Kejžar went through different periods.
This reflects also in his performances. His work is mainly oriented towards
Western European countries, where he has been working in several major academies and dance centres.
The performance is both a punk concert and a dance performance. The author is
interested in the form and content of the performing experience on the stage itself,
which satisfy the experts in the art of performing as well as everybody else. He uses
themes and motifs from the Brothers Grimm tales. On the other hand, the performance deals
with the position of an artist in an urban environment. What "to be heard" really means and
what conditions must one fulfil in order to be heard? Terrorism, rebellion, constant negation?
An artist should not be a victim of the system, who would not find a moment of realization
during his life. The performance communicates through a world of fantasy, which it constantly
tries to overturn and install into reality. It mixes naivety with faith, death with life. The
author's idea is: "Objective perception is an illusion, which defies the reality of our subjectivity!"
